The attic door opened only a few inches before the cat stepped in front of the family and refused to move. For the first time, the orange tabby seemed frightened. The boy gently pushed the door wider and spotted an old wooden chest covered in dust. The cat walked straight to it and placed a paw on the lid.
Inside the chest were dozens of photographs, letters, and children’s drawings. Most were faded with age, but one picture immediately caught the boy’s attention. It showed the same stuffed bunny he had been finding every night. Beside it stood a young girl nobody in the family recognized.
Then the boy unfolded a letter hidden beneath the photos. The handwriting was shaky, but one sentence stood out: “If the cat ever brings the bunny back, it means he finally found the right child.”
The room fell silent.
The cat suddenly looked toward a dark corner of the attic where another small object rested beneath a blanket. As the boy slowly pulled the fabric away, he realized the mystery wasn’t about the toy at all. It was about something that had been hidden in the attic for decades—and the cat seemed to know exactly where to find it. What he uncovered next explained why the cat had guarded the bunny for so many years.
